Healthy Davis Together focused on implementing multiple initiatives to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and safely return to city and campus life. As UC Davis epidemiologists, public health experts, campus coordinators, business owners and city officials worked together to implement a community-wide approach, we captured these efforts to share what we learn so other communities and college towns can apply what works.

An independent evaluation of Healthy Davis Together by Mathematica found the program reduced COVID-19 case counts in Davis, CA, by 60 percent, avoided 4,144 cases of COVID-19 and 275 COVID-19 related hospitalizations, and averted 35 COVID-19 related deaths during a 16-month period from October 2020 through January 2022.

HDT’s pilot across 96 classrooms in Davis has taught us that while HEPA filter sampling appears to be a more efficient tool compared to floor swabs, more research is needed to determine the utility of this kind of monitoring in schools. A new paper details our process and findings.

As officials and public health experts consider learnings to apply to future pandemic preparedness efforts, HDT believes saliva-based testing is a scalable approach to consider. UC Davis Genome Center implemented the Array Tape-based IntelliQube PCR System from LGC Biosearch Technologies to develop a relatively inexpensive, rapid turnaround, high throughput saliva direct COVID-19 test.
